Did the Virgin Mary really appear to Saint Catherine Labouré in 19th-century France? At Convento La Milagrosa in Cali, that question hangs in the air, mingling with the scent of incense and the murmur of prayers. Convento La Milagrosa isn’t just a beautiful building. It’s a living testament to that miraculous event and its ripple effects across the world, all the way to Colombia. The story begins in 1830, a time of spiritual renewal within the Daughters of Charity. This renewal was closely linked to the apparitions of the Virgin Mary and the creation of the Miraculous Medal. This renewed Marian devotion spread with the Daughters of Charity as they journeyed. In 1888, they arrived in Colombia, establishing themselves in Popayán and carrying their devotion to the Miraculous Medal with them. Convento La Milagrosa opened its doors in Cali much later, in 1980. This marked the 150th anniversary of the apparitions to Saint Catherine Labouré. The opening was celebrated with a perpetual novena. This tradition continues to draw Catholics to Convento La Milagrosa. They seek to deepen their faith and emulate Mary’s life of devotion. The impact of Convento La Milagrosa extends beyond its walls. Sister María Emilia Echeverri Mejía, inspired by her time in Paris at the site of the apparitions, spearheaded a Marian renewal within the province upon her return in 1970. Along with Sister Luzdari Jiménez Serna, she established the Vincentian Marian Youth groups in 1973, fostering a vibrant community of young people dedicated to service and faith. Thousands of young people passed through this “School of the Mother,” as Sister María Emilia called it, finding purpose and meaning in their lives. Convento La Milagrosa stands as a beacon of faith. It is a place where miracles are sought and where the legacy of the Miraculous Medal continues to inspire.
