Question how many secrets are hidden within the walls of the Convento de Corpus Christi? This convent also known as Mosteiro de São Domingos das Donas de Vila Nova de Gaia stands as a testament to centuries of history and devotion.

Founded in 1345 by D. Maria Mendes Petite the Convento de Corpus Christi has a rich and complex past. Maria a noblewoman dedicated the monastery to the Eucharist. She endowed it with considerable wealth. The order was affiliated with the Mosteiro de São Domingos das Donas de Santarém.

A legal dispute with the Bishop of Porto caused delays. The Convento de Corpus Christi finally opened in 1354.

The original church suffered damage from Douro River floods. This led to the construction of a new church in the 17th century. Padre Pantaleão da Rocha de Magalhães designed the new temple. He modeled it after the Mosteiro do Bom Sucesso de Santa Maria de Belém in Lisbon. Gregório Fernandes adjusted the choirs to suit the local needs. Later in the 18th century the baroque facade was added showing the influence of Nicolau Nasoni.

During the Siege of Porto the nuns sought refuge in the Mosteiro de São Salvador de Vairão. Conventual functions ceased in 1894. This happened after the death of the last nun Marcelina Cândida Viana.

In 1930 the building was given to the sisters of the Instituto do Bom Pastor. They established a female education and regeneration institute. An increase in residents led to the construction of the west wing in 1940. This wing features Estado Novo architecture.

In the early 1990s the religious orders withdrew. The Sovereign Military Order of Malta took over. Through the Fundação Frei Manuel Pinto da Fonseca the convent continued as a center of apostolate.

The Vila Nova de Gaia Municipal Council regained control in 2003. Recent renovations transformed it into a cultural space the Espaço Corpus Christi. It also houses a master’s program for the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto.

The church features a centralized design. Its nave has an octagonal shape with a vaulted ceiling. The main chapel is to the east and the choirs to the west. A dome tops the structure.

Artistic highlights include four side altars and a high choir. The high choir displays early baroque style. It has a U-shaped chair arrangement on two levels with gilded carvings. The ceiling consists of 49 coffers decorated with oil paintings on wood.

Paintings and imagery in the church reflect Dominican themes. They depict saints Doctors of the Church and Dominican figures. Key devotions include the Holy Rosary the name of Jesus and the Eucharist.

The 17th-century chair is unique. Each seat has a different grotesque mask. These masks represent Black people exotic figures and various animals and plants. Each scroll is a different sculpted mask suggesting influences from the Ultramarine Empire.

D. Leonor de Alvim wife of Condestável D. Nuno Álvares Pereira is buried here. Her grandmother D. Maria Mendes Aboim who died in 1355 and founded the convent is also buried here. The tomb of Álvaro Anes de Cernache the first lord of Gaia is also located here. He was the standard-bearer of the Ala dos Namorados in the Battle of Aljubarrota in 1385.

Today the Convento de Corpus Christi stands as a symbol of faith history and artistic legacy. Its walls echo with stories of noblewomen nuns and battles. A place where art and history intertwine it continues to inspire and intrigue.
