Picture this. You stand before the Convento de Avessadas. This isn’t just any convent. It’s a place steeped in history nestled in Marco de Canaveses. It houses the Sanctuary of the Infant Jesus of Prague. This significant landmark holds centuries of stories within its walls.

The Convento de Avessadas is much more than a simple religious structure. It’s a testament to faith perseverance and community. It began its existence as a noviciate. Over time it expanded. It became home to a philosophical course and a minor seminary.

In 1960 the cornerstone for the current building was laid. The grand sanctuary was consecrated in 1961. The ceremony was an emotional event. It was attended by many people including the Archbishop of Mytilene. The new temple was built to welcome the many pilgrims seeking blessings from the Divine Infant.

The convent has seen renovations and adaptations. Its original structure remains intact. The two identical wings are separated by the church of the Infant Jesus’ Sanctuary. Each wing boasts its own cloister.

In 1980 a section was converted into a house of prayer. In 1982 the Spirituality Center opened. This was during the fourth centenary of the death of Saint Teresa of Jesus. Many bishops and other religious and civil figures attended the grand opening.

Today the Convento de Avessadas remains a vibrant community. A small group of Discalced Carmelite friars live here. They dedicate themselves to prayer and service. They actively welcome candidates for the order. They lead the Spirituality Center. They serve as spiritual guides offering reconciliation and support to the people of the region.

The Convento de Avessadas is more than just stones and mortar. It’s a living testament to faith a center of spiritual growth and a beacon of hope for the community it serves. It’s a place where history breathes and faith flourishes. A place you won’t soon forget.
