The Containerbahnhofbrücke Mannheim, a colossal steel and concrete behemoth, stretches across the landscape like a ribbon of steel. Standing here, you may not realize that it spans over 1,100 meters, making it the longest railway bridge in Baden-Württemberg and one of the longest in all of Germany. It was built between 1976 and 1978, and although finished in 1978, it wasn’t until 1987 that trains began to regularly traverse this iconic structure. The bridge was named in honor of the former container shipping yard that once occupied the land below. It’s a curious name for a bridge, but it certainly reflects the vital role the railway has always played in Mannheim’s industrial and commercial landscape. And don’t be fooled by the seemingly straightforward design; it’s a marvel of engineering, incorporating a series of 24 single-span girders, each spanning 23.35 meters! This complex structure was built using a modular system, with sections pre-cast and then assembled on site. Look closely at the supports, and you’ll notice they are anchored by six massive concrete piles, each measuring 1.5 meters in diameter. This ensures the bridge stands strong, capable of handling the weight of the high-speed trains that race across its surface. Even today, the bridge is a vital connection, carrying passengers and cargo across the Rhine and Neckar valleys, linking Mannheim to Stuttgart and beyond.
