Amidst the bustling heart of Brussels, the Construction Materials Hub stands as a testament to innovative urban planning. The Construction Materials Hub, located at the Vergotedok, isn’t just a warehouse complex. It’s a vital part of Brussels’ lifeline, breathing new life into the city’s industrial heritage. This innovative project, completed in 2018, signifies the first step in Brussels’ ambitious Canal Plan. The plan aims to revitalize the canal precinct, fostering a vibrant mix of activities and seamlessly integrating the port with the urban landscape. The Construction Materials Hub cleverly minimizes truck traffic, shifting the focus to canal-based logistics. This reduces congestion and promotes a greener approach to transporting construction materials. The complex boasts a distinctive saw-tooth roof, a result of incorporating the existing mooring posts into the design. This unique architectural feature divides the site into over 20 sections, each with its own 10-meter roof. The central entrance, carved out from the main structure, creates a semi-public square extending towards the canal. This offers a glimpse of the waterway, inviting passersby to appreciate the integration of industry and urban space. More than just a storage facility, the Construction Materials Hub acts as a dynamic distribution center. It supplies building materials to the city and collects construction waste, facilitating a circular flow of resources. This innovative approach reduces environmental impact and promotes sustainable practices within the construction industry. The Construction Materials Hub received the Holcim Acknowledgment prize in 2014. It was lauded for its sustainable approach to infrastructure development. Its large canopy roof houses solar panels and a rainwater collection system. This collected water and generated energy serve the on-site ready-mix concrete plant and even contribute to the surrounding neighborhood. The Construction Materials Hub stands as a symbol of Brussels’ commitment to sustainable urban development. It demonstrates how industrial sites can be transformed into vibrant, integrated spaces that benefit both the city and its environment.
