Undeterred he moved to Houston in the Republic of Texas. There he worked as a clerk in the State Department. An opportunity arose. He studied law under Attorney General John Birdsall. He passed the bar in 1839.

He became a District Judge in 1847. He resigned in 1854 to return to private practice. His political career took off. He won election to the Texas House of Representatives in 1857. He represented Austin and Fort Bend counties. He served during turbulent times. He was Speaker of the House during the Civil War. He was elected in 1861 then again in 1863. His leadership during those years was undeniably pivotal.

Buckley’s story is one of perseverance. He overcame hardships. He achieved great success in both law and politics. This plaque is a testament to his life. It reminds us of his contributions to Texas. It’s a window into the struggles and triumphs of Texas’s past. A reminder of a man who served his state even during its most difficult times. His legacy lives on.
