A league of his own. That’s what they called Conrad “Cooney” Grauer. Welcome to Conrad Grauer Field. Right here in the Bronx. This isn’t just any baseball field. It’s a testament to a man’s unwavering dedication. A man who dreamt of the major leagues. His dream may have never come true. His impact on this community however is immeasurable.
Conrad Grauer. A Kingsbridge resident for over sixty years. He founded the Kingsbridge Little League in 1951. Cooney saw the potential in this neglected space. Acquired by Parks in 1950 it was far from ideal. Overgrown. Unsafe. He envisioned a safe haven for neighborhood kids. A place where baseball dreams could take root.
For nearly thirty-five years Cooney tended this field. He nurtured it. He loved it. He was rarely seen without his tools. A rake. A shovel. Even in his eighties. He was a fixture here. In 1974 Local Law No 39 honored him. Conrad Grauer Field. A rare honor given while he was still alive. A true testament to his impact.
The field wasn’t always perfect. Poor drainage caused the outfield to sink. The community rallied. Donations poured in. New topsoil arrived. In 1996 overhead lights were installed. Night games became a reality. The field continues to thrive. A legacy built on hard work and unwavering passion.
This field is more than just dirt and grass. It’s a symbol of community spirit. It’s a place where dreams are chased. It’s a tribute to Cooney. A man who turned a neglected space into a vibrant hub. His legacy echoes in every swing. In every catch. In every game played here. So take a moment. Soak it in. The spirit of Conrad Grauer lives on in Conrad Grauer Field.
