Congregation Tifereth Israel has a rich and storied history. It began with a small group of Jewish families in Everett. In 1907, few Jewish families resided in Everett. Five families united by 1912. They dedicated Everett’s first synagogue at 34 Malden Street. This orthodox shul stood for 54 years.
Later Congregation Tifereth Israel merged with the Everett Hebrew School and Community Centre. In 1967, a new structure replaced the aging wooden building. The dedication coincided with the reunification of Jerusalem. It also marked the Jewish people’s access to the Holy Temple grounds after 2000 years.
Tragedy struck on an August evening in 1982. An electrical fire destroyed the synagogue. Yet, courage sparked a rebuild. People from all walks of life were inspired.
Three Roman Catholic priests risked their lives. They entered the burning building to rescue the Torah scrolls. The community welcomed these heroes. They carried the Torahs back to the bimah of the new building in 1983.
Congregation Tifereth Israel is traditional and egalitarian. New members are always welcome. They share fellowship and bring fresh ideas. Traditional prayer services are held weekly. All Jewish Holy Days are observed.
