This story began long before this building existed. It started with the merging of several congregations. Each congregation had its own unique history. They also had its own identity. Beth David was founded in 1886 by Romanian Jewish immigrants. Tifereth Jerusalem was established in 1904 by Russian Jewish immigrants.
In 1965, these congregations decided to join forces. This merger created Tifereth Beth David Jerusalem. The name became quite a discussion point. Each of the founding synagogues wanted its name to be first. Tifereth Jerusalem argued that it had already merged with another community. Beth David claimed to be a thriving synagogue. A compromise was reached. Tifereth would come first. Beth David would be in the middle. Jerusalem would be last. Thus, Tifereth Beth David Jerusalem was born. Locals often call it the Baily Shul. Some also call it TBDJ.
Beth David’s story is particularly interesting. It was named after Pinchas ben David Elimelech Pinsler. He was the father of the first president. The congregation first met in rented quarters. Later, they purchased a building from the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue. This building was the oldest synagogue in Canada at that time.
Tifereth Jerusalem had its own challenges. Internal squabbles divided the community. These arguments even led to the opening of a second synagogue. One synagogue was known as “Die Roite Shul” due to its red bricks. The other was called “Die Veise Shul” because of its white bricks.
Despite the disagreements, community life revolved around the synagogue. The members even built their own building. They literally used their own hands.
Several prominent rabbis have led Tifereth Beth David Jerusalem. Rabbi David Hartman served from 1960 to 1971. Rabbi Zolly Claman is the current rabbi. He arrived in Montreal in 2022. He is known for his inspiring and practical Torah teaching.
Tifereth Beth David Jerusalem has adapted to the changing needs of its community. It established an afternoon school. Later, it created a nursery school. The synagogue also has a library. It is named after Nathan Dermer. He was the last president of Beth David Synagogue.
The Tifereth Beth David Jerusalem holds many events. They have lectures, seminars, and Torah institutes. Simchat Torah celebrations are a city wide spectacle. The synagogue supports Israel Independence Day. It also supports Holocaust memorial services.
This congregation has expanded its building over the years. It was enlarged between 1988 and 1990. This provided more space for worship and activities. Today, Tifereth Beth David Jerusalem continues to be a pillar of Montreal’s Jewish community. It embraces its history. It also looks forward to a vibrant future.
