“Their hearts have been broken.” These words echoed within Congregation Shirat Hayam during a service. It followed attacks in Israel. Hundreds gathered to mourn and pray. Rabbi Michael Ragozin led the service. He said his congregation was devastated. There was real sadness and tremendous empathy.
Congregation Shirat Hayam offers multiple pathways to Jewish life. It provides learning and prayer. The congregation delivers fulfilling spiritual experiences. These boundaries are set as a Conservative congregation. Halacha sets their boundaries. Congregational values and preferences also guide them.

Darkeinu is the post bar/bat mitzvah program. It serves students in grades 8-12. Darkeinu means “our way.” This program offers a flexible way for teens to continue learning. They grow as Jewish adults. Students choose activities. These activities come from five areas of Jewish life and learning. They receive credit hours for their engagement. They also receive credit for learning and serving the Jewish community.
Leadership comes from members professionals and clergy. They are supported with resources committees and an engaged congregation. Leaders are learned and committed. They respond to the needs of the Congregation Shirat Hayam. The leadership works collaboratively. They meet congregational goals. They develop future generations of leadership. Congregational goals guide the selection of leaders.
Interestingly Congregation Shirat Hayam exists because of a merger. Temple Israel of Swampscott and Temple Beth El merged. The charter was signed in 2005. Temple Israel’s building was sold to the Town of Swampscott in 2006. From sadness and division a stronger community was formed. It stands as a testament to unity. It is a place of constant learning and faith.
