Picture this. A modest yet majestic building stands before you. This is Congregation Kol Israel a cornerstone of Crown Heights Brooklyn. Founded in 1924 it’s the oldest continuously practicing Orthodox community in Brooklyn. Its history is woven into the very fabric of this neighborhood.

Kol Israel isn’t just a synagogue it’s a living testament to faith resilience and community. Built in 1928 its design is a simple two-story rectangular structure. The architect Tobias Goldstone cleverly incorporated random laid fieldstone. The synagogue’s western wall offers a unique view. It overlooks the open cut of the Franklin Avenue Line of the New York City Subway.

For many years Kol Israel remained a relatively small congregation. It faced challenges adapting to a changing world. Yet in 2015 a turning point arrived. The board hired Rabbi Sam Reinstein. His mission was to rejuvenate the synagogue making it appealing to younger generations. Innovative programming was introduced. This included monthly art shows and after-parties. The synagogue even hosted the first ever Jewish Comic Con. This featured notable comics artists like Isaac Goodheart and Jordan B Gorfinkel.

However Kol Israel’s journey wasn’t without controversy. In 2016 the construction of an eruv sparked a heated debate. An eruv is a symbolic boundary that allows observant Jews to carry items on Shabbat. While it expanded the area for observance it faced staunch opposition from Hasidic Chabad neighbors. They believed the area was geographically unsuitable for an eruv. The ensuing conflict resulted in vandalism and arrests. The situation highlights the complexities of religious coexistence in diverse urban environments.

Today Congregation Kol Israel continues to thrive. It’s a place of worship a community hub and a living example of Jewish heritage in New York City. It stands as a symbol of adaptability and the enduring power of faith. Its unique history and ongoing story make it a captivating site to visit and explore. The building itself is a remarkable piece of history listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. Kol Israel is much more than bricks and mortar it is a living breathing testament to faith community and the enduring spirit of Brooklyn.
