Founded in 1992 Congregation Kol Ami stands as a beacon of progressive spirituality. It’s more than just a synagogue. It’s a vibrant community hub in West Hollywood. This Reform congregation has become a leader not only in the Jewish community but also within the LGBTQ+ and broader West Hollywood communities.
Kol Ami’s story is one of resilience and innovation. It began during the height of the AIDS crisis a time of immense fear and uncertainty. Thirty-five individuals had a vision a sanctuary of acceptance and inclusion. They dared to create a space where all were welcome regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. This bold vision resonated deeply. Kol Ami quickly became a safe haven for LGBT Jews and their allies.
In 2001 Kol Ami achieved a monumental milestone. It became the first predominantly LGBTQ+ synagogue in the US to build its own building. This stunning structure houses a sanctuary a reception lobby a library a full kitchen and a meeting room. The building itself became a symbol of the congregation’s growth and influence. The congregation’s founding Rabbi Denise L Eger played a pivotal role. She’s an internationally known LGBTQ+ and human rights activist. Rabbi Eger’s leadership was instrumental in bringing LGBTQ+ acceptance to Reform Judaism. Her work extends beyond the walls of Kol Ami. She’s made significant contributions to the wider fight for equality. She’s held leadership positions in national organizations. She was even named one of the 50 most influential Jewish leaders in the US.
Congregation Kol Ami continues to thrive. It provides a wide range of programs and services to the community. This includes Shabbat and Holy Day services classes lectures a film series and support groups. Kol Ami offers spaces for rent too. It consistently hosts various types of events.
