Step into the heart of Brooklyn’s Kensington neighborhood. Here stands Congregation Chevra Linath Hazedek a testament to the enduring spirit of the city’s Jewish community. This unassuming building at 109 Clara Street holds a rich history. It’s a story of resilience and renewal.

Congregation Chevra Linath Hazedek first opened its doors in 1927. It quickly became a vital hub for Orthodox Jews in the area. The synagogue’s architecture is significant. It’s a prime example of an early 20th-century tenement synagogue adapted to a wider lot. The building stands as a unique architectural and cultural landmark. It represents the Yiddish-speaking Eastern European Jewish community that thrived in this part of Brooklyn.

For many years Congregation Chevra Linath Hazedek faced challenges. The congregation dwindled. The building needed repairs. Yet hope arrived in the form of Rabbi Tzvi Ortner. Rabbi Ortner not only became the spiritual leader but also spearheaded a remarkable renaissance. He transformed the synagogue into a thriving center for Torah study and prayer. Under his leadership the synagogue underwent extensive renovations. A state-of-the-art mikvah was also installed.

Rabbi Ortner’s efforts weren’t solely his own. Longtime members like Reb Yisroel Spiegel and Reb Shlomo Shamir played pivotal roles. Reb Shamir’s family ties to the Chidushei Harim added an interesting layer to the synagogue’s history. The full name of the congregation is Linas Hatzedek d’Chidushei Harim. The reason for this addition is unknown to this day.

The synagogue’s revitalization wasn’t without obstacles. The COVID-19 pandemic temporarily halted progress. However the community persevered. The new mikvah a beautiful addition stands as a testament to their unwavering faith. It was dedicated to the memory of Reb Mordechai Stutman a beloved member.

Today Congregation Chevra Linath Hazedek is alive and vibrant. It’s a place of warmth acceptance and community. Daily prayers are well-attended. Nightly Daf Yomi shiurim are delivered by Rabbi Ortner himself. Shabbat is celebrated with a kiddush and a full Shalosh Seudos. This remarkable resurgence of Congregation Chevra Linath Hazedek is a story of faith resilience and the power of community. It’s a beacon of Jewish life in the heart of Brooklyn. The synagogue continues to serve as a cherished landmark. It embodies the enduring spirit of its community. It’s a reminder that even in challenging times faith and community can triumph.
