What if a wedding dress could tell a story? At Congregation Chevra Kadisha B’nai Jacob Beit Hazikaron Beth Hillel, each gown whispers tales of love, tradition, and community. This synagogue, affectionately known as the Chevra synagogue, houses Gemach Naomi Gittel. This special place offers a unique service to brides in need. Congregation Chevra Kadisha B’nai Jacob Beit Hazikaron Beth Hillel became the home of this remarkable project in 2007. It was the brainchild of Lieba Jacobson and Claudia Litvak Polachek. They recognized a need in the community. Some brides couldn’t afford a new gown, while others sought a more sustainable option. Gemach Naomi Gittel, nestled within the Chevra synagogue, became the answer. The gemach was named in memory of a young girl who never had the chance to wear a wedding dress. It started small in Jacobson’s home. As the collection grew, it found a permanent space at Congregation Chevra Kadisha B’nai Jacob Beit Hazikaron Beth Hillel. A fashion show fundraiser even allowed them to purchase new gowns. Today, the gemach boasts a beautiful array of contemporary gowns and veils. Any woman can make an appointment. She can borrow a gown, alter it, and return it after her special day. The gemach operates on trust, with only a small cleaning fee requested. In 2008, the Chevra sisterhood embraced the project. They renovated a special room in the synagogue to showcase the gowns. Congregation Chevra Kadisha B’nai Jacob Beit Hazikaron Beth Hillel is more than a place of worship. It is a pillar of community support, embodying the spirit of gemilut chasadim, acts of loving kindness. Each wedding gown at Gemach Naomi Gittel represents a dream fulfilled, a story begun, thanks to the generosity of others within the walls of Congregation Chevra Kadisha B’nai Jacob Beit Hazikaron Beth Hillel.
