Established in 1967 Congregation Beth Shalom boasts a rich history. It began as the Beth Shalom Ethiopian Hebrew Congregation. Rabbi Levi Ben Levi led the first service at 441 Willoughby Avenue. The congregation later moved to 609 Marcy Avenue. They established a school and a kosher restaurant. By 1969 Congregation Beth Shalom had found a home at 730 Willoughby Avenue. They opened a community center offering classes and activities. Membership thrived reaching as high as 200. The congregation’s legacy includes notable figures like Rabbi Levi Ben Levi and Cantor Eliazar Brooks. Congregation Beth Shalom also honored the Tuskegee Airmen and hosted an event for David Dinkins New York City’s first African American mayor. Today Congregation Beth Shalom continues its mission. It provides spiritual religious educational and social needs for members. It welcomes visitors from around the globe. The congregation serves as a place of peace and worship.
