Imagine stepping back in time to the 1800s. Two congregations blossomed in Dorchester. These congregations eventually led to the vibrant Congregation Beth El-Atereth Israel we see today.
Congregation Beth El-Atereth Israel has a rich history in the greater Boston area. It represents a continuation of those two congregations founded in Dorchester. In the mid 1950s a significant event occurred. The first Orthodox minyan in Newton Centre began. This picturesque suburb is eight miles west of Boston. This minyan sparked the growth of a vibrant Orthodox community in Newton.
In 1965 a new chapter began. Under the leadership of Rabbi Abraham Koolyk a beautiful new building was constructed. This building accommodated the growing membership. It provided an inspiring setting. It was perfect for davening learning and simchas.
The main sanctuary of Congregation Beth El-Atereth Israel is beautiful. It comfortably seats 300 people. On Yomim Noraim the space expands. It opens to the adjoining social hall. This creates space for over 650 people.
Congregation Beth El-Atereth Israel also includes a beis medrash. A youth room and a classroom wing are included too. The wing contains six classrooms. It has a library as well. The social hall hosts many events. Shabbos kiddushes and Seudos Shlishis happen here. Simchas from bar and bat mitzvah luncheons to weddings are hosted here too. It accommodates seating for over 300.
In 1988 Rabbi Abraham Koolyk retired. Congregation Beth El-Atereth Israel welcomed Rabbi Gershon Segal. He had been a Rabbi in a Midwestern Shul for seven years. Since then young families have joined the congregation. This influx added spirit and dynamism. It created a warm and caring multi-generational environment.
Congregation Beth El-Atereth Israel strives to be inclusive. They value the full participation of individuals of all abilities. Besides minyanim and regular classes the Shul sponsors special events. Shabbatonim with visiting Scholars-in-Residence are included. A full schedule of youth activities is offered. Lectures on life-cycle events are available. Political issues and religious topics are discussed too. Instructive and inspiring programs related to the land and people of Israel are also available.
