The Diocese of San Diego has a rich history. Its origins stretch back to the establishment of the California Missions. Mission San Diego de Alcalá was founded in 1769. Reverend Junipero Serra founded it in present-day San Diego. This marked the beginning of the Catholic presence in the region.
In 1840, Pope Gregory XVI established the Diocese of California. It included both Alta California and Baja California. The episcopal see was set at San Diego. Francisco Garcia Diego y Moreno became the first bishop.
After the Mexican-American War, Alta California became part of the United States. The Vatican divided the Diocese of California in 1849. This created an American section named the Diocese of Monterey.
Over time, the diocese evolved. In 1859, it was renamed the Diocese of Monterey-Los Angeles. In 1922, the Vatican further divided it. The southern portion became the Diocese of Los Angeles-San Diego.

Many dedicated individuals have led the Diocese of San Diego. Charles Francis Buddy served from 1936 to 1966. Francis James Furey followed from 1966 to 1969. Leo Thomas Maher led from 1969 to 1990. Robert Henry Brom then took over from 1990 to 2013. Cirilo Flores served briefly from 2013 to 2014. Cardinal Robert W. McElroy was appointed in 2015.

The St. Joseph Cathedral Parish has a rich history. It was founded in 1874. The community celebrated 150 years in 2024. In 1875, a frame church was dedicated. Bishop Francis Mora dedicated it on land from Alonzo Horton. In 1894, a new brick church was completed. It was an imposing structure. A fire partially destroyed the Cathedral in 1903. The reconstructed Cathedral was dedicated in 1941.
