It’s a testament to the city’s evolving relationship with its iconic river. Opened on December 23, 2023, Công viên bến sông Sài Gòn transformed a neglected area into a 49-acre oasis. For over ten years, this land lay abandoned, a forgotten corner of Ho Chi Minh City. Now, it thrives as a hub of activity, drawing locals and tourists alike.
Công viên bến sông Sài Gòn stretches along the Saigon River’s right bank, from the Saigon River Tunnel to Ba Son Bridge. It faces Bạch Đằng Quay park across the water, creating a balanced harmony of green spaces on both sides of the river. The park’s future is even more ambitious. Plans are underway to extend it to the Thu Thiem Bridge, creating the “Creative Park”. This new section promises to be a hub of innovation and artistic expression.
The history of Công viên bến sông Sài Gòn is deeply intertwined with the river itself. This area was once a bustling boat quay and ferry terminal. Known as Thủ Thiêm Quay or “Sea Almond Quay,” it was a vital link to Thủ Thiêm before the tunnel and bridges were built. A large Terminalia catappa tree, which still stands today, marked the terminal’s location. The ferry service ceased operations in late 2011 after the Saigon River Tunnel opened. The area then fell into disuse until its revitalization as Công viên bến sông Sài Gòn.
Since New Year’s Eve 2023, Công viên bến sông Sài Gòn has become a favored spot for celebrations. Thousands gather here to enjoy vibrant firework displays. The nearby Thủ Thiêm Tunnel Roof also hosts spectacular firework shows for major city events. Even the Thủ Thiêm Quay has found new life. It now serves as a pier for the Saigon Waterbus, mirroring the old ferry route from Bạch Đằng Pier to Thủ Thiêm Pier. Công viên bến sông Sài Gòn stands as a symbol of renewal and the city’s commitment to creating vibrant public spaces.
