How could a simple table change the course of history? We are standing before Confidencen, or as it is also known, Ulriksdal Palace Theatre. This beautiful building tucked away in the park of Ulriksdal Palace isn’t just a feast for the eyes – it holds centuries of stories within its walls. Confidencen is more than just Sweden’s oldest Rococo theatre. It was born from a queen’s vision, a love letter to the arts commissioned by Queen Louisa Ulrika of Prussia. Imagine the year is 1753. The queen, having received Ulriksdal Palace as a gift from her husband, King Adolf Frederick, yearned for a space dedicated to theatre. The former stables and tavern, already graced with a new facade by Carl Hårleman, were chosen for this transformation. While Hårleman likely had initial plans for the theatre, fate intervened. Upon his death in 1753, the task fell to the talented architect Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz. He rose to the occasion, crafting an intimate theatre space radiating French Rococo elegance within the building’s existing structure. But the real marvel lay hidden within the reception rooms – a technological marvel of the time. A table, known as a “table à confidence,” took center stage in the grandest room. This wasn’t just any table. With a touch of a mechanism, it could descend into the room below, disappearing as if by magic. This ingenious invention allowed the royal family to dine and converse without servants present. They could speak freely, in “confidence.” This is how this remarkable theatre earned its name – Confidencen. Over the years, Confidencen has witnessed grand balls, captivating performances, and even the presence of the legendary Carl Michael Bellman. It has lived many lives, even serving as a schoolroom and a telegraph station when its theatrical days seemed behind it. Thankfully, thanks to the dedication of individuals like Kjerstin Dellert, this architectural gem was rescued from obscurity and restored to its former glory. Today, Confidencen stands as a testament to the enduring power of art and ingenuity. As you enjoy a performance within its candlelit auditorium, remember the stories whispered within these walls. Imagine the murmur of hushed conversations around the magical descending table, the echoes of applause for theatrical legends, and the tireless efforts that brought this treasure back to life.
