“Is that it?”. You might be surprised by the seemingly simple appearance of the Condizione Umana. This sculpture doesn’t boast grand size or intricate details. But don’t be fooled. This unassuming artwork holds a powerful message about our very existence. Right here, in Piazza Einaudi, stands Agenore Fabbri’s Condizione Umana, a bronze and stainless steel sculpture made in 1983. This artwork depicts a man imprisoned, a stark representation of the struggles and limitations we all face. Although simple in design, the Condizione Umana has become a symbol, not just for the art world but for Milan itself. The sculpture has always attracted attention. Sadly, not all of it has been positive. Over the years, this powerful artwork has become a frequent target of vandalism. It’s been painted, defaced and even used as a perch for pigeons. In a way, this mistreatment is a poignant reflection of the very theme the sculpture explores: the vulnerability of the human condition. Despite the challenges it has faced, the Condizione Umana still stands. It’s a reminder that even in the face of adversity, we endure.
