Concordia University a name echoing Montreal’s motto Concordia salus meaning well-being through harmony stands proudly before you. Its history a vibrant tapestry woven from two distinct threads Loyola College and Sir George Williams University.
Loyola a Jesuit institution tracing its roots back to 1848 started as part of Collège Sainte-Marie. It became independent in 1896. Loyola first resided downtown. It later moved west in 1916 occupying three buildings on its current Loyola Campus.
Sir George Williams University meanwhile emerged from YMCA evening classes in 1851. It blossomed into a co-educational college in 1926 offering university-level courses by 1929. It granted its first degrees in 1936 earning its university charter in 1948 the same charter under which Concordia currently operates.
These two institutions with their rich legacies merged on August 24 1974 forming Concordia University. The merger wasn’t without its challenges. The 1969 Computer Centre Incident at Sir George Williams highlighted racial tensions leading to important changes in university policies.
Since its founding Concordia has seen impressive growth. Student enrolment exploded surpassing 49000 by the 2023-24 academic year more than double its initial number. The university significantly expanded its research capabilities securing over $35 million in Canada Foundation for Innovation funding since 1997. Its Canada Research Chairs increased from three in 2004 to 28 in 2020 a testament to its growing research prowess.
Concordia’s ambitious spirit is reflected in recent initiatives. PLAN/NET ZERØ aims for carbon neutrality by 2040 transforming its campuses into living labs for sustainable solutions. The launch of the School of Health in 2023 unites faculty from various disciplines to tackle health-related challenges. A significant $123 million grant in 2023 will fuel electrification and decarbonization research through the Volt-Age program.
Concordia’s growth is not just academic. It’s physical too. Significant infrastructure development has reshaped both campuses since 2003. New buildings like the Applied Science Hub opened in 2020 symbolize its commitment to interdisciplinary research and innovation. The Grey Nuns Residence a renovated National Historic Site of Canada houses students in unique accommodations.
