Deep in the heart of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, stands Concord Church of Christ. A beacon of faith and resilience, its story is deeply intertwined with the history of Brooklyn itself. Concord Church of Christ wasn’t always here. Its journey began in 1847, in the humble living room of John and Hagar Washington. Founded by abolitionists, including the fervent Samson White, the church’s initial home was on Concord Street near the Manhattan Bridge, lending the church its enduring name. The church’s journey reflects the very migration of Brooklyn’s African American community. From its beginnings near the waterfront, where many slaves and free blacks once toiled, it moved to Canton Street, then to Duffield Street in downtown Brooklyn, and later to Adelphi Street in what is now Fort Greene. Finally, in 1939, Concord Church of Christ found its home in Bedford-Stuyvesant, taking over a Gothic-style church previously occupied by a white congregation. Tragedy struck in 1952 when a fire ravaged the building. Undeterred, the congregation rallied, raising an impressive one million dollars to rebuild. The current structure, completed in 1956, stands as a testament to their unwavering faith and community spirit. Its modern brick facade with Gothic inspirations, expansive stained glass windows, and prominent red double-doors, create a powerful presence. The church’s influence extended beyond its walls. Adjacent buildings house a credit union, an elementary school, a nursing home, and senior apartments, all testaments to Concord Church of Christ’s commitment to social programs. Concord Church of Christ played a significant role in the Civil Rights Movement and other national political movements. The church has always been blessed with strong leadership. Reverend William T. Dixon, known as “Father Dixon,” served for 46 years, emphasizing education. William M. Moss, a follower of W.E.B. Du Bois, promoted the idea of a “Talented Tenth” and organized literacy programs. Reverend James B. Adams, a young WWI chaplain, navigated the Great Depression, supporting struggling parishioners and fostering the church’s renowned music program. Then came Reverend Gardner C. Taylor, who served from 1948 to 1990, further strengthening the church’s commitment to education, music, community development, and political action, even personally delivering funds raised in Brooklyn to Dr. King’s movement in Alabama. Dr. Gary V. Simpson, the current pastor, has continued this legacy, adding family services initiatives. He focuses on supporting youth and seniors. Concord Church of Christ stands today not just as a place of worship, but as a vital community hub, a testament to its rich history, dedicated leadership, and unwavering commitment to service.
