But this dream unfolded during a time of scarcity. The communist regime prioritized exporting agricultural goods to pay off external debts. This left Romanians facing empty shelves and long queues. So, the domed architecture of these complexes, resembling circus tents, coupled with the ironic lack of food, earned them the moniker “hunger circus.” The Complexul Comercial Cercul Magic is one of only two domed “hunger circuses” completed before 1989. Originally part of a network of eleven such complexes, it stands as a testament to a difficult era. Today, Complexul Comercial Cercul Magic bustles with activity. It’s a vibrant marketplace filled with clothing stalls, cosmetics, and various goods. You can even find a tailor and a fresh produce market. It’s a far cry from its empty past.
