Imagine this: a neoclassical beauty standing defiant against the Cebu skyline. This is the Compa\u00f1\u00eda Mar\u00edtima Building. It is also known as the Mar\u00edtima Ruins. This building whispers tales of a bygone era. It stands as a testament to Cebu’s rich history.
Built in 1910, the Compa\u00f1\u00eda Mar\u00edtima Building was one of the first structures in Cebu’s port area. It quickly became a landmark. Over the years, it has been known by different names. Locals remember it as the Fernando Building and the Shamrock Hotel.
Before the war, this area bustled with activity. Travelers would arrive by sea. They would step off ships and into the grand Shamrock Hotel. The Compa\u00f1\u00eda Mar\u00edtima Building offered comfort and respite just across the street.
The building’s design is neoclassical. It features arched windows and classical pilasters. These features were typical of American-era structures. Ornamental beams and sculptured railings once adorned its roof decks. Architect Karl Cabilao even compared its facade to Renaissance palazzos. He saw the beauty and elegance in its design.
But the Compa\u00f1\u00eda Mar\u00edtima Building has seen its share of hardship. World War II bombings damaged it. Yet, it stood firm. After the war, repairs were made. The Compa\u00f1\u00eda Mar\u00edtima de Ceb\u00fa moved in. This company was a pre-war transportation giant. It was established in 1886. It became the biggest shipping firm in the Philippines. Its vessels sailed around Mindanao ports.
In 1980, the business filed for bankruptcy. The Compa\u00f1\u00eda Mar\u00edtima Building was abandoned. Typhoon Ruping in 1992 further damaged the structure. The roofs were torn apart. Today, the building stands roofless. Its interior walls are missing.
Interestingly, the land beneath the Compa\u00f1\u00eda Mar\u00edtima Building is subject to an ownership dispute. The Cebu Port Authority and the Cebu City government both claim it. In 2013, the city government issued a tax declaration. This showed their possession of the property. However, the CPA filed a case. In May 2024, both parties reached a compromise.
Despite its disrepair, the Compa\u00f1\u00eda Mar\u00edtima Building continues to serve the community. It has been used as a parking lot. During Sinulog, it becomes Devotee City. Pilgrims stay here during the festivities.
In December 2022, the building was wrapped in a giant red ribbon. It looked like a Christmas gift. This was part of a project to revitalize the area. The aim was to present the Compa\u00f1\u00eda Mar\u00edtima Building as a gift to Cebu.
