Whispers of history echo within these weathered walls. Here stands the Compañía de Jesús, a testament to Antigua’s vibrant past. The Compañía de Jesús wasn’t always a silent ruin. It was once a bustling hub, the heart of Jesuit influence in Guatemala. Its story begins in 1607, a mere three hundred meters from the grand cathedral. A generous donation from Leonor Celada, widow of the royal scribe, gifted the Jesuits land. This land previously belonged to descendants of Bernal Díaz del Castillo, the chronicler of the conquest. Construction of the Compañía de Jesús began, transforming the plot into a grand complex. By 1626, a church and college stood proudly, marking the Jesuit presence. The Colegio de San Lucas, housed within, quickly gained renown. It educated the cream of Antigua society, shaping future leaders and scholars. Francisco Antonio Fuentes y Guzmán, chronicler Francisco Vázquez, Pedro de Betancourt, and Rafael Landívar all graced its halls. The Compañía de Jesús wasn’t just a center of learning. It was a beacon of faith and culture. Its vibrant energy attracted the city’s elite. The church, renowned for its beauty, was a stage for grand celebrations. But the earth had other plans. The 1717 San Miguel earthquake shook Antigua, damaging the Compañía de Jesús. Undeterred, the Jesuits rebuilt, creating an even grander structure. Yet, the tremors returned in 1751. The San Casimiro earthquake brought down the church’s dome. Once again, the resilient Jesuits rallied, restoring their beloved Compañía de Jesús to its former glory. Tragedy struck again in 1773. The devastating Santa Marta earthquake left the church in ruins, a stark reminder of nature’s power. The city relocated, but the Compañía de Jesús remained. It stood as a poignant reminder of Antigua’s golden age. In later years, it housed a textile factory, then a bustling market. Today, the Compañía de Jesús stands as a proud ruin. Its walls whisper tales of resilience, faith, and the enduring spirit of Antigua. Restored by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation, the former college now serves as a training center. It’s a space where history and progress intertwine. As you gaze upon these weathered stones, remember the vibrant life that once filled these spaces. Imagine the echoes of learning, laughter, and prayer. The Compañía de Jesús remains a vital thread in the rich tapestry of Antigua’s history.
