Stepping into the world of Community of Christ, we uncover a story woven with threads of faith, perseverance, and transformation. Right here in Los Angeles, this church stands as a testament to a journey that began over two centuries ago. Community of Christ, originally known as the Church of Christ, was founded in 1830 by Joseph Smith Jr. His spiritual experiences led to the publication of the Book of Mormon and the establishment of a new church. Driven by missionary zeal, early members journeyed west, establishing gathering places in Ohio and Missouri. Community of Christ designates Independence, Missouri, as its “Center Place,” highlighting the church’s historical connection to that area. The church experienced both growth and conflict. The construction of the Kirtland Temple in Ohio marked a period of development, while tensions in Missouri led to the church’s expulsion from the state. The assassination of Joseph Smith Jr. and his brother Hyrum in 1844 marked a turning point, leading to a succession crisis and the fragmentation of the movement. In 1860, Joseph Smith III, son of the founder, accepted leadership, ushering in an era of reorganization. Community of Christ expanded its reach with overseas missions and established new settlements, including Lamoni, Iowa. The 20th century witnessed significant changes, including the ordination of women and the construction of the Independence Temple. In 2001, under the leadership of W. Grant McMurray, the church adopted its current name, Community of Christ, to better reflect its mission of proclaiming Jesus Christ and promoting communities of joy, hope, love, and peace. The story of Community of Christ is one of resilience and adaptation. It’s a story that continues to unfold, guided by its commitment to peace, justice, and spiritual healing.
