Seventy-five years ago the Community Church of Little Neck celebrated a milestone. A diamond anniversary. Right here on Little Neck Parkway. This wasn’t just any celebration. The Community Church of Little Neck decided to give back 10 percent of their fundraising to the community.
The Community Church of Little Neck has deep roots. Its story stretches back to the Civil War era. A Bible school began in 1878. It was housed in a hall built for a Methodist church. This hall now serves as the church’s chapel. From this humble beginning the Community Church of Little Neck grew. In 1925 it was formally chartered. The founders created an interdenominational ministry. They wanted to welcome people from diverse backgrounds.
The Community Church of Little Neck’s connection to Little Neck is incredibly strong. In 2000 Reverend Janet Rhodes initiated the community giving plan. When she left the plan was delayed. However Reverend Matthew Mardis revived the initiative. In January 2005 the church fulfilled its promise. The Ronald McDonald House and the Little Neck-Douglaston Lions Club each received $850. This act demonstrates the church’s commitment to its neighbors.
The remaining funds from the anniversary campaign went to the church itself. They planned capital improvements. The Community Church of Little Neck continues to evolve. It strives to strengthen its ties to the neighborhood. It provides worship space and community outreach. Reverend Mardis believes that the church has a unique connection to Little Neck. He feels a deep bond between the Community Church of Little Neck and its community.
