What if walls could talk? The walls of Community Baptist Church could tell a story of resilience. They have witnessed the transformation of the Bronx. They’ve seen the borough at its lowest point. Between 1970 and 1980, devastation swept through the Bronx. A staggering number of buildings, in some areas over 97%, were lost to fire and abandonment. Yet, amidst this desolation, Community Baptist Church emerged as a beacon of hope.

Community Baptist Church wasn’t built overnight. It began as a vision in the hearts of two Bronx school teachers, Marty and Valerie Silverberg, in 1995. They started small, meeting in a storefront on Tremont Avenue. The church moved several times, growing with each relocation. From Southern Boulevard to Westchester Avenue, it finally found its home on Commonwealth Avenue. The journey reflects the church’s unwavering commitment to its community. The name, Community Baptist Church, embodies this spirit.

The Silverbergs recognized they needed support to further their mission. They joined Baptist Mid-Missions in 1996. This partnership provided structure and guidance. In 1998, they reached out to Pastor Joel Grassi. This connection proved crucial years later. Pastor Grassi joined the church as Assistant Pastor in 2009 and eventually became Senior Pastor in 2013.

One of Community Baptist Church’s most remarkable achievements was the transformation of a dilapidated synagogue. This abandoned building, a relic of the past, became a symbol of renewal. The church, with the help of its community, demolished the roofless structure and built a new worship center in its place. It stands as a testament to the power of faith and community.

The church continues to thrive under the leadership of Pastor Joel Grassi, a New York City native with a passion for urban ministry. He brings a wealth of experience and education to his role. From teaching in public schools to seminaries and churches abroad, he now shares his knowledge and passion for the Bible at Community Baptist Church.
