Step into the vibrant world of Commedia Futura. This isn’t just any theatre. It’s a melting pot of creativity nestled within Hanover’s Südstadt district. Since 1982 Commedia Futura has been a haven for experimental theatre.

Founded by Wolfgang A Piontek a then art student in Braunschweig Commedia Futura initially gathered fellow students and artist friends. Their aim was ambitious genre-bending theatre. Their first production Das Beziehungsmee(h)r set the stage for their unique approach. Imagine the energy of those early days. They performed in various Hanover locations. They honed their distinct theatrical style through festivals and workshops.

In 1987 their journey took a significant turn. They moved into a former ice factory. This became the Eisfabrik a renowned arts and culture centre. Commedia Futura transformed this space. They meticulously converted the Schwarzen Saal and later the Zentralhalle into intimate theatres. Each could seat 99 people. Their grand opening arrived in March 1988 with a Samuel-Beckett festival.

Commedia Futura’s productions aren’t just plays. They are multimedia extravaganzas. They blend elements of spoken theatre dance music and video projections. Over 50 unique productions have emerged. Notable hits include Andy Warhol Der Geist des 20. Jahrhunderts Lost in Twin Peaks Ali The Greatest Himmel und Hölle and Traumatorium.

Wolfgang A Piontek remains the artistic director. His brother Peter Piontek serves as the company’s dramaturg. Their collaborations with dancer and choreographer Felix Landerer since 2006 have further elevated their productions. The ensemble is a rotating cast. It draws from an international network of actors dancers video artists and designers.

Commedia Futura is more than just a theatre. It’s a cultural institution. It hosts festivals and guest performances. It collaborates as a co-producer with other independent groups. It’s a testament to the power of artistic vision and collaboration. The spirit of experimentation thrives within Commedia Futura’s walls. It continues to push boundaries and captivate audiences. It’s a living legacy in Hanover.
