Seventy-six feet tall it stands a majestic column at the heart of Columbus Circle. This is the Columbus Monument a tribute to Christopher Columbus. Erected in 1892 it marked the 400th anniversary of Columbus’s arrival in the Americas.
The monument wasn’t always here. Initially plans called for it to be in Bowling Green. But by 1890 it was decided that Columbus Circle would be its home. Italian businessmen from across the US raised a significant portion of the funds for this imposing structure. Il Progresso a New York City Italian-language newspaper also contributed significantly.
The sculptor Gaetano Russo created parts in his Rome studio. Other workshops in Italy also helped bring his vision to life. The bronze elements were cast in the Nelli Foundry. In September 1892 the completed monument was shipped to New York. It was quickly transported to Columbus Circle.
The official unveiling was a grand affair on October 13 1892. Thousands gathered to witness this momentous occasion. The ceremony marked the city’s celebration of the 400th anniversary.
The monument has faced challenges. Subway construction in the 1920s and 1930s shifted the statue two inches north. The top even tilted. Repairs and cleaning followed in 1934. Further restoration work was done in 1992 for the 500th anniversary of Columbus’s voyage and the monument’s own centennial. It was rededicated that year.
Controversy also surrounded the monument. In 2017 debates erupted. Critics pointed to Columbus’s mistreatment of indigenous peoples. Calls for its removal arose. However others including members of the Italian-American community defended it. They saw it as a symbol of their heritage and contributions. Vandalism also occurred. Full-time security was added.
In 2018 however the New York State Board of Historic Preservation took action. It added the Columbus Monument to the state and national historic registers. This ensured its preservation a testament to its historical significance. Even today the monument stands a powerful reminder of the past its controversies its beauty and its enduring presence in the heart of New York City.
