Do you see that giant egg before you? That is the Columbus Egg in Ibiza. The Columbus Egg is more than just a sculpture. It embodies the spirit of exploration.
The Columbus Egg is locally known as “Huevo de Colón”. It stands tall at the entrance to Sant Antoni de Portmany. Many tourists photograph this monument. The Columbus Egg commemorates the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s arrival in America. This was in 1492. It was inaugurated on October 12, 1992. Three local artists designed and created the work. Antonio Hormigo was the sculptor. Julio Bauzá was the architect. He designed the project. Luis Ojeda was responsible for the modeling.
The sculpture is six meters high. It is sculpted in reinforced concrete. Inside the Columbus Egg is a replica of Columbus’s ship. The vessel is 2.8 meters. It is fashioned in iron. Its prow faces the American continent.
The egg shape alludes to a historical legend. The legend says that Columbus claimed he could stand an egg upright. He did this by slightly flattening its point. This anecdote created the famous “Columbus’ egg”.
Some theorists claim Columbus was an Ibizan native. Ibizan historian Nito Verdera supports this. His studies reveal coincidences. Verdera claims Ibiza as Columbus’ birthplace. According to Verdera, Columbus named settlements after Pityusic islands. Examples are Ses Margalides, Ses Formigues, and Illetes. Others are San Salvador, Cala Vedella, and Cap de Barbaria. Punta Roja and Cala Saona are also examples. Verdera says Columbus never wrote in Italian. Instead, he used Spanish with Catalan words. Some words are typical of Ibiza.
Another Columbus Egg resides in Seville, Spain. It was a gift from Moscow. That Columbus Egg commemorates Columbus’s arrival in the Caribbean in 1492. That sculpture stands 45 meters tall.
Regardless of its true origin, the Columbus Egg stands as a symbol. It represents innovation and creativity. It embodies the courage to defy limitations. Take a moment to appreciate its symbolism. Let it inspire you to embrace new horizons.
