Colston

Journey with me to the northern fringes of Glasgow, to a place called Colston. Here, where the city fades into the suburbs, lies a district full of quiet stories. Colston is a largely residential area. It’s bordered by the vibrant energy of Milton and Springburn, yet retains its own distinct identity. The A803, known locally as Springburn Road, cuts through Colston’s heart. As you head north, the road transforms into Kirkintilloch Road, leading you towards the town of Bishopbriggs. Imagine children from decades past hurrying along these very streets to Colston Secondary School. This school, a cornerstone of the community for much of the 20th century, educated generations of Colston residents. Although the main school building is gone, replaced by housing, remnants of its past remain. Some of the original school buildings have found new life. They now serve as laboratories for Scottish Water, a testament to Colston’s adaptability. The echoes of students may be gone, but the spirit of learning continues in a different form. Today, most local children attend the modern Springburn Academy, carrying on the tradition of education in a new era. While Colston itself is primarily residential, the necessities of life, and a few small pleasures, are within easy reach. Local takeaway shops offer a quick bite, and a nearby supermarket provides for daily needs. The larger shopping centers of Springburn and Bishopbriggs are just a short trip away, offering a wider selection of goods and services. And if health concerns arise, Stobhill Hospital stands ready just to the east, a reassuring presence in the community. Colston sits on a subtle dividing line. South of Colston Road, the area falls under the jurisdiction of Glasgow City Council. North of the road, however, you cross into East Dunbartonshire, becoming part of Bishopbriggs. So, as you stand here in Colston, you stand at the edge of the city, in a place where the urban and suburban intertwine. It is a place of quiet streets and familiar faces. It’s a place where history whispers from behind repurposed buildings and where the rhythm of life flows steadily along the A803. Colston, an unassuming neighbourhood. But a place with its own unique story to tell.
