Wow. Look at the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame Plaques Mural. It’s a testament to Colorado’s rich athletic history. The Colorado Sports Hall of Fame itself began as a simple idea. In 1960 the Greater Chamber of Commerce’s Metro Sports Committee suggested a Hall of Fame. This sparked a wave of enthusiasm. The Chamber formed a committee. It included future Hall of Famers like Roger Dougherty and Byron White. Sports journalists like Chet Nelson and Starr Yelland helped too.

By July 1964 the Chamber approved the project. The Colorado Sports Hall of Fame was officially incorporated in November 1964 by Byron White’s law firm. A selection committee began choosing inductees. The first class entered in April 1965. This selection process continues today. The mural before us is a celebration of their achievements.

For almost 35 years the Hall of Fame lacked a permanent home. That changed in 1998. The Metropolitan Football Stadium District proposed a museum in the new Denver Broncos stadium. This collaboration was key. The Colorado Sports Hall of Fame partnered with local universities. University of Denver students created a business plan. University of Colorado Denver students designed the museum. Other students helped develop the exhibits. Thanks to generous donations the museum opened in August 2001.

The Colorado Sports Hall of Fame Museum sits near Empower Field at Mile High. It offers a journey through Colorado’s athletic legacy. The museum showcases the finest athletes coaches and leaders. It includes names you know and others who deserve recognition for their dedication sportsmanship and achievements. Before 2001 Colorado’s sporting greats were largely unknown to many fans. Now this mural and the museum make their stories accessible and celebrated. The Gallery of Legends section rotates its displays regularly. Currently it features 24 inductees. Look closely. You might recognize a few familiar faces. Each plaque is a story of courage sacrifice endurance and power. It’s a celebration of the spirit of competition and the unwavering dedication of Colorado’s athletes. This mural is a powerful reminder of the incredible legacy forged on Colorado’s fields courts and tracks.
