Once known as Rutledge Street Pond, Colonial Lake has been a Charleston treasure since the 1700s. Today, we stroll around this tidal pond surrounded by wide walkways. Welcome to Colonial Lake.

Colonial Lake officially received its current name in 1881. This was to honor the Colonial Commons established in 1768. However, locals affectionately call it “The Pond” still today.

In 1768, an Act of the Commons House of Assembly designated this area for public use. The lake’s creation occurred later in 1869. Wide walkways and a picturesque promenade soon followed.

Imagine Charleston without the lively Harleston neighborhood we know today. Back then, the area west of Colonial Lake was undeveloped.

Boating was once very popular on Colonial Lake. So popular that licenses became necessary. By 1910, boat races were staged here. That same year, palmetto trees were planted along the promenade.

From the early to mid-1970s, fountains graced Colonial Lake. However, they were removed in 1977 due to complaints about saltwater overspray.

Believe it or not, you can fish in Colonial Lake. It is a tidal lake that connects to the Charleston Harbor. Mullet, mud minnows, shrimp, and even flounder sometimes visit. In 2008, a deer was even pulled from the lake after it wandered into the water.

The Charleston Parks Conservancy renovated Colonial Lake. The work was completed in the summer of 2016. The park was fenced off for a year and a half during the four-million-dollar project.

During the holiday season, a Christmas tree is lit in the middle of Colonial Lake. Joggers, dog walkers, and those seeking quiet conversations find solace here. Benches provide resting spots.

The Charleston Parks Conservancy, founded by philanthropist Darla Moore, renovated Colonial Lake in 2016. The cost was nearly $6 million. Improvements were made to the hardscape and water flow. Over 20,000 plants were added.

The lake is enclosed by hardscape and has a spillway. It’s a popular spot for fishing, model boat enthusiasts, and walkers. The lake is bordered by busy city streets.

So, the next time you pass by Colonial Lake, remember its rich history. Think of the boats, the races, and the people who have enjoyed this space. It is a place for everyone.
