Did you know that Collingwood Park in Brisbane was once a mine? Let’s journey back to 1967. Westfalen No 3 Colliery began mining operations. For seven years the land was mined until 1974. Imagine the dust the noise the earth trembling underfoot.

Collingwood Park didn’t exist then. It was just land above a mine. In 1976 a change occurred. Part of the land was rezoned residential. This seemingly simple decision would have huge consequences. By the 1980s roads began cracking. The legacy of the mine was showing itself.

Then in 1982 Collingwood Park was officially born. A developer gave it its name. It was marketed as ‘The Dress Circle Suburb of Ipswich’. The name implied a leafy quiet escape. This was in stark contrast to nearby Redbank a hub of industry and collieries. The name itself was a clever marketing ploy designed to attract buyers.

The suburb’s story wasn’t without further drama. In 2013 residents went to court. They sought compensation for subsidence damage to their homes. This was directly related to the old mine. The government eventually bought some properties.

Collingwood Park boasts two primary schools Collingwood Park State School and Woodlinks State School. They opened in 1986 and 2011 respectively. The 13th Australian Scout Jamboree was held there in 1982-83. This major event brought many people to the then very new suburb.

Today Collingwood Park is a thriving suburb. It’s a testament to its resilient community. It’s a blend of modern housing and a fascinating industrial past. The name hints at a serene atmosphere. But beneath the surface lies a story of mining and challenges overcome. The legacy of the mine is part of Collingwood Park’s unique identity. A reminder that even suburban tranquility can be built on foundations of industry and hard-won victories.
