Why is this place called College Point? That’s a question many visitors ask. College Point in Queens New York City isn’t home to a college today. But its name harkens back to a fascinating chapter in its history. In 1835 Reverend William Augustus Muhlenberg founded St Paul’s College and Grammar School. This seminary aimed to train missionaries and teachers. It was considered a pioneering effort in American church schools. The college building even boasted pink and white marble.

Unfortunately St Paul’s College faced challenges. The Panic of 1837 crippled its finances. The New York State legislature refused to grant it a collegiate charter. Without that charter the college couldn’t award degrees. Enrollment dwindled. Muhlenberg left New York in 1847. The college closed by 1850. Despite its short lifespan the name College Point endured. The neighborhood held onto that moniker for nearly two centuries.

College Point’s story continues. Conrad Poppenhusen a German-American industrialist arrived in 1854. He transformed the area. He built factories and became a philanthropist. His legacy includes the Poppenhusen Institute. This institute housed Abraham Lincoln’s log cabin during the Civil War. More remarkably it established America’s first free kindergarten in 1870.

The neighborhood’s character continued to evolve. For over fifty years College Point hosted a bustling airport. Speed’s Airport opened in 1929. It served as a vital travel hub before LaGuardia Airport’s construction in 1939. Smaller planes and even a Goodyear blimp frequented its runways. Sadly a tragic plane crash in 1977 damaged its reputation. The airport closed in 1984. Its site remains largely abandoned although redevelopment proposals have surfaced over the years.

Today College Point retains a unique blend of residential and industrial areas. Its waterfront offers parks and stunning views of the Whitestone Bridge. The neighborhood’s cultural richness includes a developing Chinatown and a sizable Taiwanese community. The College Point Little League building a historic landmark stands as a testament to the community’s spirit. It serves as a reminder that the past is always with us shaping the present and influencing the future. The legacy of St Paul’s College may be gone but its name endures a silent testament to dreams and aspirations.
