Behold the College of Science. It stands as a beacon of knowledge and innovation. Founded on December 6, 2017, this institution at Southern University of Science and Technology is research-oriented. It focuses on basic sciences and related applied sciences and technologies.
The College of Science comprises five academic departments. These are Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Earth and Space Sciences, and Statistics and Data Science. It also houses five research institutes. These include the National Center for Applied Mathematics Shenzhen. Also included are SUSTech International Center for Mathematics and Shenzhen Grubbs Institute. The Shenzhen Institute for Quantum Science and Engineering is there too. Finally the Center for Advanced Light Sources Science.
College of Science aims to cultivate top-notch talents. They should have solid foundations. They should have inter-disciplinary competence. They need creativity and practice awareness. The College values students’ innovation spirit and practice capability. It has boosted 14 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Four fellows of overseas academies have been boosted too. Also 25 faculties have been awarded the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. Eleven were nominated for the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars. There are 186 tenure-track professors. Many are in Shenzhen Talent Peacock Plan and Pearl River Talent Program. Some serve on the editorial boards of international journals. Others have positions in overseas institutes.
College of Science offers eight undergraduate programs. It has four postgraduate programs. There are also four Ph.D. programs. College of Science provides four post-doctoral research stations.
Experts at the College of Science have made great strides in their research. They use international platforms and an independent PI system. An increasing number of papers are published in Science, Nature, and other renowned journals. Laboratories have been established. Cooperation among the College, enterprises, and other research institutes has thrived.
The College of Science has established major research platforms. This was done with support from various bodies. These are the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province. The Development and Reform Commission of Shenzhen Municipality and Southern University of Science and Technology are also supporters. These platforms include the National Center for Applied Mathematics Shenzhen. Another is the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Computational Science and New Material Design. The Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Quantum Science and Engineering is included too.
The College of Science also includes the Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Small Molecule Drug Discovery and Synthesis. The Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Deep Offshore Oil and Gas Exploration Technology is there too. These create favorable conditions for scientific breakthroughs.
Inheriting the spirit of exploration and innovation, the College of Science aims high. It contributes to the development of the Guangdong – Hong Kong – Macau Greater Bay Area. It aids the modernization of Shenzhen. Anchored in fundamental sciences, the College vigorously expands its research scope. It strives for a world-class College of Science in the foreseeable future.
The Department of Mathematics was established in June 2015. In January 2018, it was granted the ability to offer master’s and doctoral degrees. The mathematics subject was selected as a key discipline. This was for the upgrading of Guangdong province’s higher education in November 2018.
The Department of Physics was established in 2011. It provides first-class physics education and top-notch physics research. The Department of Chemistry of SUSTech is a key discipline in Guangdong province. It was established in 2011. The discipline has entered the top 1% in ESI global ranking. The chemistry discipline ranks 28th in Nature Index 2018 in China.
The Department of Earth and Space Sciences was established in December 2016. The Department of Statistics and Data Science was founded in April 2019.
