“A crucible of legal minds.” That’s one way to describe the College of Law at Korea University, right here in Seoul. The College of Law, a cornerstone of Korea University, has a rich history interwoven with the nation’s journey. In 1905, amidst Korea’s struggle for sovereignty, Bosung College was founded. It housed two specialized departments: Law and Economy. This marked the very beginning of modern legal education in Korea, paving the way for the College of Law as we know it today. Bosung College, the precursor to Korea University, faced immense challenges. Following Korea’s annexation in 1910, the college was in dire straits. It was saved by the Cheondogyo religious group, whose members contributed rice from their daily meals to support the struggling institution. This act of public support underscored the importance of education to the Korean people. A new building was erected in 1914, symbolizing a renewed commitment to learning. Later, in 1932, Kim Sung Soo, a visionary leader who dreamt of a university built by the people, revitalized Bosung College. He spearheaded the construction of the iconic Main Building in Anam-dong, where Korea University’s main campus now stands. This move signaled a new era for the institution. After Korea’s liberation in 1945, Bosung College was renamed Korea University. The College of Law played a vital role in shaping the country’s legal framework, contributing to the development of constitutionalism in the newly independent nation. In 1955, the College of Law underwent a restructuring. It established a dedicated Department of Law, further solidifying its role as a center for legal studies. This period marked a significant step towards specialization and focused legal education within the university. With the adoption of the law school system in 2009, the Korea University Law School was born. This marked a transition to a more specialized, graduate-level legal education, aligning with international standards. The College of Law, now a cornerstone of Korea University, stands as a testament to the enduring power of education and its role in shaping a nation’s future. It continues to produce legal professionals who shape Korea’s legal landscape.
