Did you ever wonder what “God-saeng” means? Here at the College of Human Ecology at Seoul National University, students pondered this very question. The College of Human Ecology, centered around Building 222, is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a vibrant hub of research and exploration, delving into the very fabric of human life. Food, clothing, housing – the essentials that shape our existence are meticulously studied within these walls. The college houses the Division of Consumer and Child Studies, the Department of Food & Nutrition, and the Department of Fashion and Textiles. The annual “College of Human Ecology Academic Festival” showcases the impressive work being done here. In 2023, the festival’s second year, a symposium by the Department of Consumer Science tackled the topic of “Young Adults Living God-like, Buying God-like.” They delved into the motivations behind the younger generation’s pursuit of “God-saeng,” a term referring to a luxurious lifestyle. The Department of Food & Nutrition explored dietary inclusivity on campus, raising awareness about the needs of vegans and Muslims. Meanwhile, the Department of Child Development & Family Studies challenged traditional notions of filial duty, examining the “willingness to repay” among adult children living with their parents. Beyond the symposiums, the festival featured alumni leadership lectures, offering practical wisdom gleaned from real-world experience. The 42nd Fashion and Textiles Fashion Show, themed “SEOUL,” transformed the university’s main gate into a runway showcasing student creativity. From sustainable materials to reflections on urban development, the show was a testament to the students’ artistic vision. Finally, graduate students shared their research through poster presentations, covering topics like voice recognition AI and consumer needs. The College of Human Ecology isn’t just about academics; it’s about understanding and improving lives.
