Silpakorn University began as the School of Fine Arts in 1933. It was under Thailand’s Fine Arts Department. Professor Silpa Bhirasri was instrumental in its creation. He was an Italian sculptor formerly known as Corrado Feroci. King Rama VI commissioned him to work in the Fine Arts Department.
Bhirasri expanded his classes. He included more members of the public. This led to the establishment of the School of Fine Arts. The school evolved and gained university status. It was officially named Silpakorn University on October 12 1943. The Faculty of Painting and Sculpture was its first faculty.
In 1955 the Faculty of Thai Architecture was established. It was later renamed the Faculty of Architecture. Two more faculties emerged. These were the Faculty of Archaeology and the Faculty of Decorative Arts.
Silpakorn University diversified its offerings in 1966. It split the four faculties into sub-specializations. The Wang Tha Phra campus became too small. A new campus was established. This was the Sanam Chandra Palace in Nakhon Pathom Province. It was King Rama VI’s former residence. The Faculty of Arts was established here in 1968. The Faculty of Education followed in 1970.
Three more faculties were added later. The Faculty of Science in 1972 was one of them. Then came the Faculty of Pharmacy in 1986. Next was the Faculty of Engineering and Industrial Technology in 1992. The Faculty of Music was created in 1999.
Silpakorn University expanded again in 1997. A new campus opened in Phetchaburi Province. It was named Phetchaburi Information Technology Campus. The Faculty of Animal Sciences and Agricultural Technology arrived in 2001. The Faculty of Management Science was established in 2002. The Faculty of Information and Communication Technology was created in 2003. Silpakorn University International College was also founded. It provides an international curriculum.
The Faculty of Painting Sculpture and Graphic Arts resides at Wang Tha Phra. It was Silpakorn’s first faculty. This occurred when the university was formally established in 1943. Initially it offered painting and sculpture. Its curriculum broadened since then. It now covers painting sculpture graphic arts Thai art and art theory.
The faculty emphasizes research and public activities. This strengthens the relationship between the university and society. Faculty members are involved in international exchanges. They also promote cooperation.
Ganesha is the emblem of Silpakorn University. He is a Hindu deity. Ganesha symbolizes arts and crafts. The chan tree is the university tree.
Many notable figures have graduated here. These include Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and Chalermchai Kositpipat. Kositpipat is the founder of the White Temple.
