Remember Michael Topping’s name as we stand before the College of Engineering, Guindy. It is Asia’s oldest technical institution. Founded in 1794, it predates many European engineering schools. This Chennai landmark has shaped India’s technological landscape for over two centuries.
The story of the College of Engineering begins with the East India Company. They needed surveyors. Michael Topping suggested a school and it started modestly with eight students in a building near Fort St George. Imagine those early students learning their craft with limited resources. They laid the foundation for what would become a great institution.
In 1858, the school became the Civil Engineering School. A year later, it was renamed College of Engineering. Mechanical engineering was added. For a short time, the college moved to Kalasa Mahal, Chepauk. In 1920, it found its permanent home here in Guindy. The red and white building stands as a testament to its rich history.
College of Engineering, Guindy pioneered several engineering disciplines in India. It was among the first to offer degrees in mechanical, civil, and electrical engineering. Telecommunication, highway engineering, printing technology, and materials science soon followed. This college has consistently been at the forefront of technical education.
In 1978, the College of Engineering became a constituent college of Anna University. It became the university’s main campus. The college spans 223 acres in the heart of Chennai. It provides accommodation for over 3,500 students in its 16 hostels. International and exchange students also find a home here.
The College of Engineering offers a wide array of academic programs. Undergraduate degrees are available in various engineering fields. Postgraduate programs include MBA, MCA, M.E., M.Sc., M.Tech., M.S. by Research, and Ph.D. programs. The college has 16 departments, six university-affiliated centers, and 12 research centers. These centers provide ample opportunities for research and development.
Student life at the College of Engineering is vibrant. Many centers support students’ needs. These include the SC/ST cell, the Center for Professional Development Education, and the Center for International Affairs. The Health Centre, Center for Women Empowerment, and Student Affairs also play vital roles.
The college boasts numerous student-run societies and clubs. The CEG Tech Forum, Students Association, and various engineering associations provide platforms for students to explore their interests. There is also the Rotaract Club of CEG, the Chess Club and many more.
Kurukshetra is a major event at the College of Engineering. It is a techno-management festival. UNESCO has patronized it. Techofes is another significant event. It is an inter-college cultural festival. Sangarsh, organized by the Rotaract Club, is a musical concert for charity.
The College of Engineering has produced many notable alumni. A Lalitha was India’s first woman engineer. Nagarjuna is a famous Telugu film actor. Crazy Mohan was a Tamil comedy actor and writer. Raj Reddy won the Turing Award. Verghese Kurien was the architect of India’s White Revolution. These alumni have made significant contributions to various fields.
As you explore the campus, remember the clock tower. For decades, its bell guided students to their classes. The spacious campus once offered a calm and green environment. The masonry arches reflect the architectural expertise of a bygone era.
The College of Engineering continues to evolve. It embraces innovation while preserving its heritage. It remains a beacon of technical education in India. The college strives for excellence. It prepares students to meet the challenges of the future. Its legacy endures.
