Initially a small Survey School near Fort St George it was established by Michael Topping. He needed surveyors for the East India Company. The school started small with just eight students. Can you imagine that? Eight students were the foundation of this magnificent institution.

Over time it grew. It became the Civil Engineering School in 1858. Then the College of Engineering in 1859. Mechanical engineering was added to the curriculum. The college moved around for a bit. It finally settled into its current location in Guindy in 1920.

This impressive campus spreads over 223 acres in the heart of Chennai. It’s the main campus of Anna University. The college offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.
