Founded in 1888 by the Christian Brothers Collége Mont-Saint-Louis stands as a testament to Quebec’s rich educational history. Initially located at 230 Sherbrooke Street East its imposing Second Empire style building designed by Jean-Zéphirin Resther embodied the prestige of the institution. The grey stone structure with its mansard roof and central dome was a remarkable sight. Imagine the students of that era. They walked these very streets. They studied within those walls.

For eighty-one years the Collége thrived under the Brothers’ guidance. It offered both commercial and scientific programs. Notable alumni include Emile Nelligan a celebrated poet Ernest Cormier a renowned architect and even Jean-Paul Riopelle a world-famous artist. These individuals all walked these halls. They learned in these classrooms. They are a part of Collége Mont-Saint-Louis’s legacy.

In 1969 the Collége relocated to its current location at 1700 Henri-Bourassa Boulevard East in the Ahuntsic district. One of the buildings on this campus is the Maison Saint-Joseph-du-Sault-au-Récollet. This building dating back to 1852 stands as a historical landmark. It is a classified historical monument since 1979. Think of the generations of students who have passed through its doors.

The Collége’s coat of arms a golden star an Irish harp a sand dune a beaver and a fleur-de-lis reflects its rich history and values. The motto Virtute scientia meaning “Virtue and Knowledge” embodies the spirit of the school. The Nelligan Gala an annual event celebrating student achievement showcases the enduring spirit of excellence at Collége Mont-Saint-Louis. The student newspaper Le Déclic carries on the legacy of its predecessors.

Today Collége Mont-Saint-Louis continues its tradition of academic excellence. It offers a comprehensive curriculum and a thriving student life. It provides its students with tutor programs and various extracurricular activities. The Association of Former Students of Mont-Saint-Louis founded in 1919 actively maintains connections and fosters a sense of community. The student association AGEGMSL plays a crucial role in representing student interests. The parents’ association also actively contributes to the life of the school. The Collége Mont-Saint-Louis is more than just a school. It is a community. It is a legacy. It is a beacon of education. This is more than just a building. It’s a history waiting to be explored.
