Imagine, if you will, Chennai’s landscape decades ago. It was different from the bustling metropolis we know today. The College Bridge stands as a testament to a bygone era.

Once upon a time, the College Bridge linked Pantheon Road and Commander-in-Chief Road. It facilitated passage over the Cooum River. Its name came from the nearby College of Fort St George. This college was where civil servants studied South Indian languages.

An early 19th-century map shows College Bridge House nearby. It sat between Monteith Road and Commander-in-Chief Road. Another house, Ottershaw, was also in the area. A road connected these houses to the two main roads.

The College of Fort St George significantly impacted Madras State. Madras later became Tamil Nadu. It was a pioneering educational institution. The college operated from 1812 to 1854. Its location is now the Directorate of Public Instruction campus.

Francis Whyte Ellis was a key figure. He came to Madras in 1796. He became a Writer in the East India Company. Ellis studied Tamil and Telugu. He became an ardent admirer of Tiruvalluvar. Ellis ensured the college started a publications wing.

The scholars brought out several pioneering works. These included the first dictionaries in various South Indian languages. Meanings were provided in English.

The Madras Literary Society operated as the college’s library. It later became an institution. The premises also served as a Lodge for Freemasons.

The College Bridge and its surroundings have transformed over the years. Buildings have come and gone. Institutions have risen and fallen. Yet, the name College Bridge remains. It is a reminder of the area’s rich history.

Today, the bridge serves as a vital transportation link. Commuters travel it daily. Widening the bridge would reduce traffic. It would make travel easier.

The Elephant Gate Bridge in Chennai is still facing heavy traffic. People in North Chennai are complaining about it. School and college students struggle to reach their destinations. Employees are finding it difficult to get to work.

While the area around the College Bridge has changed, its importance endures. It stands as a link to the past. It also serves as a crucial part of Chennai’s present and future. As you cross the College Bridge today, remember the stories it holds. Think of the people who walked here before. Consider the changes that have shaped this city. The College Bridge is more than just a structure. It is a symbol of Chennai’s enduring spirit.
