Amidst the vibrant tapestry of San Diego, College Avenue Baptist Church has witnessed a fascinating evolution. It stands as a testament to unwavering faith and community spirit. College Avenue Baptist Church’s journey began humbly in 1892, far from its current location. Originally named Bethel Swedish Baptist Church, it held its first services downtown at 19th and Market. The congregation, comprised entirely of Swedish immigrants, thrived under the guidance of Rev. Augustus Orgren.
Financial hardships forced the church to relocate to members’ homes in 1901. This period tested their resilience, but their faith remained unshaken. In 1907, they acquired a new property at 16th and E Streets. They continued their Swedish services until the 1920s. The church persevered through the challenging years of World War I, operating without a budget. This demonstrated their commitment to their faith.
A significant shift occurred in 1934 when the church transitioned to English services. This change fueled growth and led to their move to the College area in 1940. The church, now known as College Avenue Baptist Church, found a new home at the corner of Adams Ave and College Ave. This marked the beginning of a new chapter in their history. The congregation flourished under the leadership of Rev. Edwin Greene, expanding from 60 to 434 members by 1948.
College Avenue Baptist Church continued to grow, both spiritually and physically. The church embarked on an ambitious expansion project in the 1950s and 1960s. They constructed Fellowship Hall, Timotheon Hall, and Berean Hall, demonstrating their dedication to serving the community. These expansions provided much-needed space for the growing congregation. They also enabled the church to offer a wider range of programs and services. In the 1980s, the church experienced further growth under Pastor Dan Baumann. They even hosted traditional Swedish Christmas services. This shows their connection to their heritage.
The late 1990s brought both challenges and triumphs. Pastor Jerry Sheveland led the church to its peak attendance. They built the Centennial Education Center in 1993. However, Sheveland’s departure in 1997 created a leadership void that resulted in internal divisions. The church faced a period of instability, with various individuals stepping in to lead services. Despite these challenges, the spirit of College Avenue Baptist Church remained strong.
The early 2000s marked a period of healing and renewal. Pastor Carlton Harris took the helm in 2006, working to unify the church. He made difficult decisions, addressing the divisions that had emerged. The church faced financial difficulties during the Great Recession and the COVID-19 pandemic. However, these trials strengthened the core members’ resolve.
Pastor Chris Hilken arrived in 2023, ushering in a new era of growth and revitalization for College Avenue Baptist Church. The church experienced remarkable expansion, quadrupling in size within a year. This resurgence underscored their resilience and commitment to their mission.
