“A phoenix rising from ashes” whispered a local artist. We stand before the Coliseu do Porto a magnificent example of Portuguese Streamline Moderne and Art Deco styles. This isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to the resilience of Porto’s spirit.

Initially opened in 1908 as the Garden-hall Passos Manuel it was a vibrant hub for Portuense society. Elegant decorations ample gardens and luminous fountains offered diverse entertainment. Its capacity was a modest 700. But times changed. Demand soared. By 1937 complaints about insufficient space were rife.

Architect Jose Porto spearheaded the first plans for a grander hall. However the project faced numerous hurdles. Architects came and went. Jan Wils a Dutch architect even contributed designs. Ultimately Cassiano Branco took the helm supported by Julio de Brito. Charles Ciclis a Parisian theatre designer also contributed. His beautiful candelabras and doors remain. He sadly went unpaid.

The Coliseu finally opened its doors on December 19 1941. It hosted cinema concerts operas and circuses. Marcel Marceau and Rudolf Nureyev graced its stage.

In 1995 a controversy erupted. The Coliseu was slated to be sold to the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God. Outrage ensued. Artists and citizens united. The Associacao Amigos do Coliseu do Porto emerged. This group successfully thwarted the sale. Tragedy struck soon after. A fire ravaged the stage and main hall in 1996.

Yet again the spirit of Porto prevailed. The Coliseu was rebuilt reopening in December 1996. Extensive renovations between 1997 and 2001 modernized its facilities. A new auditorium improved acoustics and visibility. A second orchestra pit and a circus track were added. The Coliseu do Porto now boasts a standing capacity of 4000. It’s a remarkable venue for concerts and cultural events. A true symbol of Porto’s enduring spirit. A phoenix risen from the ashes.
