Ever imagine a bustling airport falling silent? Coleman A. Young Municipal Airport, once Detroit’s main aerial gateway, has a story just like that. Originally opened in 1927, Coleman A. Young, then known as Detroit City Airport, was the city’s premiere airport. For over two decades, it thrived, connecting Detroit to the world. Imagine the roar of planes taking off and landing, the excited chatter of travelers. The 1939 Official Aviation Guide even listed thirteen weekday departures on American Airlines alone. The airport truly was the heart of Detroit’s air travel. The iconic Albert Kahn designed a hangar for the airport in 1929, a testament to its importance. But by 1947, most airlines had moved their operations to Willow Run Airport, and later to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport. Coleman A. Young Airport transitioned, becoming a hub for pilot training and private aviation. However, its proximity to Gethsemane Cemetery created a significant challenge. Expanding the runway to accommodate larger, modern aircraft became impossible due to the cemetery’s location. This ultimately led to the end of commercial passenger service in 2000. The airport now stands as a reminder of Detroit’s aviation history. It still serves general aviation, but its passenger terminals and parking lots remain, echoes of a busier past.
