Founded in 1961 Colegio Mayor Pío XII stands proudly. It’s a testament to Cardinal Ángel Herrera Oria’s vision. He established this all-male residence hall. It’s part of the Pablo VI Foundation’s social works. This impressive building is affiliated with the Complutense University of Madrid. It sits within the vibrant Ciudad Universitaria.

The Colegio Mayor Pío XII is more than just a residence hall. It’s a hub of activity. It’s a place where students from diverse backgrounds come together. They share a commitment to academic excellence and social engagement. The building itself is noteworthy. Architect José de Aspiroz designed this seven-story masterpiece. It originally housed seven different colleges. Each floor formed a largely independent unit. There were floors for various dioceses. One floor was dedicated to the National Association of Propagandists. Another for Hispanic Culture yet another for the Union Organization and a final one for the Marianist brothers.

The selection process for residents was unique. It involved finding supporting members of the Christian Citizenship School. These members had specific obligations. They had to secure scholarships in their respective provinces and entities. They also needed to suggest candidates for scholarships. Finally they had to maintain a mentorship relationship with their scholars. Scholarships were very competitive. Students needed to obtain three academic degrees. One was a licentiate from the University of Madrid. This was preferable in Economics Politics Law or Superior Technical Schools. Another was a diploma from the León XIII Social Institute. Finally they needed an official journalism degree. They also had to learn English and participate in social outreach in Madrid’s suburbs.

Over the years Colegio Mayor Pío XII has faced challenges. Rising prices in 2013 made it less accessible to families with modest budgets. However the institution’s Christian commitment has been reinforced. The arrival of students from Taiwan and the Middle East enriched the community. The sharing of a chaplain among several residences since 2015 shows resourcefulness. Despite the changing times the Colegio Mayor Pío XII continues to offer a wide range of sports cultural and social volunteer activities. These activities remain essential for residents. The Colegio Mayor Pío XII has a rich history. It’s an important part of Madrid’s educational and cultural landscape. Its commitment to academic excellence and social responsibility is unparalleled. It is more than just a building. It is a community.
