Picture the Colégio Alemão do Porto a grand building standing proudly on Rua Guerra Junqueiro. Established on November 18 1901 it’s a testament to German-Portuguese collaboration. Pastor Boit from Lisbon spearheaded its creation aided by the local German community and the German Imperial Government. Imagine the excitement of its opening day preceded by a Thanksgiving mass. It was only the third German school in Portugal following those in Lisbon and Amora.

Initially the Colégio Alemão do Porto catered exclusively to German students. German was the language of instruction and daily life. Interestingly a special German language course was dropped in 1904 as most children were already fluent. However the school embraced Portuguese culture hiring a Portuguese teacher in 1910 to teach Portuguese history and geography.

World War I cast a long shadow. Portugal’s entry into the war resulted in the internment or expulsion of Germans and their descendants up to the third generation. The Colégio Alemão do Porto temporarily closed. Some families sought refuge in Vigo Spain establishing a small makeshift school. The Porto school reopened in May 1922 resuming its vital role in education.

By 2009 the student body had grown to around 700. Remarkably 85% were Portuguese. Germans comprised the majority of the remaining students. The Colégio Alemão do Porto reflects the rich tapestry of Porto’s history and its international connections.

The Colégio Alemão do Porto isn’t just about academics. It boasts a vibrant extracurricular life. The Sportbegegnung is a significant annual event. German schools from Porto Lisbon Madrid and Malaga compete in sports. The 2007 competition even gained coverage on Porto Canal. The school also participates in Jugend musiziert a music contest for German schools across the Iberian Peninsula.

A student exchange program connects the Colégio Alemão do Porto with the Albrecht-Ernst-Gymnasium in Oettingen Germany. This program fosters cultural understanding. Students spend a week in each other’s homes experiencing daily life in a different country. They visit major German cities and attend classes in their partner schools. The Colégio Alemão do Porto’s enduring legacy goes far beyond the classroom. It’s a place where cultures blend and friendships blossom. A living testament to the power of education and international cooperation. A true gem in the heart of Porto.
