“A school built bit by bit?” a child’s voice might have questioned back in the 1950s. Indeed, the Col·legi d’Educació Infantil i Primària Sant Ferran de ses Roques has a history as pieced together as a beloved patchwork quilt. Located in the village of Sant Ferran de ses Roques, nestled between the island’s capital, Sant Francesc Xavier, and El Pilar de la Mola, the school’s story reflects the changing landscape of Formentera itself. In 1958, the first two classrooms began to rise, with one, the Llampuga classroom, completed shortly after. Five years later, the Verderol classroom joined it. The school expanded organically, mirroring the growth of the village. In 1972, the Sarg classroom was built and inaugurated that September. The Roja classroom followed in 1974. One can almost imagine the excitement of the students as each new room opened, offering more space for learning and growth. Later additions included the Donzella, Rajada, and the Xalana office. Then came the Oblada and Salpa classrooms, followed by the library (Castanyola), the Gerret-Llaüt room, the Moll classroom, and covered patios. By 1992, a new classroom, now the school gym, and a staff room were added to the Col·legi d’Educació Infantil i Primària Sant Ferran de ses Roques. Between 2013 and 2014, the library was further divided into three distinct spaces: Castanyola, Pegellida, and Cornet. The school now boasts sports facilities: a multi-purpose court, a volleyball court, a dirt field, and two playgrounds. Central heating, powered by a gasoil boiler, warms every classroom since the 1998-99 school year, the same year the electrical system was modernized. The Col·legi d’Educació Infantil i Primària Sant Ferran de ses Roques has always adapted to the needs of its community. As enrollment increased, the school, once a collection of individual rooms, reached its capacity. Larger classes required split sessions. After-school activities lacked space. The special needs teacher shared a room with afternoon activities. The solution? A new, double-line school, finally inaugurated in 2020. This building stands as a testament to the school’s commitment to its students, a place where every child has the space to learn and thrive. The Col·legi d’Educació Infantil i Primària Sant Ferran de ses Roques continues to evolve alongside Formentera, a testament to the island’s enduring spirit and its dedication to education.
